Maybe you’ve heard the song, “The Blessing” by Kari Jobe and Cody Carnes. If not, you can listen here.

A lot of this song’s lyrics actually come directly from Numbers 6:24-26.

“’The Lord bless you
    and keep you;
 the Lord make his face shine on you
    and be gracious to you;
 the Lord turn his face toward you
    and give you peace.’”

This ancient blessing that is mentioned in these verses helps paint a picture for us to understand and comprehend what the actual function of a blessing was and what exactly it was supposed to do.

A blessing was one way of asking for the divine favor of God to rest upon other people, and this blessing from Scripture has five parts.

The first part conveys hope that God would first protect His people. The next asks God to smile on them, or better yet, be pleased with them. Third is a request for compassion, grace and mercy to be given to them. After that is asking for God’s approval and favor. Last but not least, they simply ask for God to provide peace.

When we ask God to bless others (or even ourselves), according to Scripture, you are essentially asking God to do each of these five things. Isn’t that powerful?

There is power in prayer, more power than we can comprehend. Do you know someone who needs blessing today? Or maybe it’s you! Either way, try using Numbers 6:24-26 as a prayer guide. God would love to hear from you.

The blessing explained, such powerful scripture.
