In the Storm

In the day to day of our ordinary lives, as we weave through traffic and grab another week’s haul of groceries, it’s easy to keep our focus simply on the next priority or stressful situtation coming our way. Maybe it’s the late bills that have to be paid this weekend, or your kid snapping back at you after an angry remark, or the looming conversation you don’t want to face at work. Whatever it is, our gaze and inward attention zeros in on the incoming storm.

But what if it didn’t have to be like that? What if, instead of staring at the storm shaking the boat, we look to the One who holds it all in His hands?

When Peter stepped out onto the water with Jesus, it was only when he looked at the storm around him that the sinking began.

But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted.” – Matthew 14:30

When we look to the problems we face, they are as real as the storm that raged around Peter. But the hand that reached out to save him is even more real. Those open arms are waiting for us to crash into them, ready to hold us tight and remind us of the truth we are so often forgetful of: to turn to Him instead of the fear.

When we look around at the wind and waves shaking us, at the raging news and despair, the rising fear can fill our vision and become the only thing in this world we see. And that’s where the beautiful truth becomes an anchor for us to cling to.

But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!” – Matthew 14:27

Jesus is here, real and close. He is waiting for you to pull your gaze away from the storm and find your rest, healing, and hope in Him.
