Are We Representing God Well To A Hurting World?
I have a friend who has met a lot of famous people. Many of these meetings were more substantial than a quick handshake in a line of others waiting to meet them…These meetings were in a room where conversations were happening and connections were being made. My friend got a real sense for who these “famous” people are in real life.
Of course, in my curiosity, I fired off a bunch of those names and asked my friend, “So… what are they really like?”
Tabloids can misrepresent who a person truly is, so I was dying to know the truth from someone who had met these people firsthand. This reminded me of something important, something spiritual…Just like celebrity culture can completely miss a person’s character and give us twisted views of someone, I fear that so many today have the wrong idea about God because of misrepresentations they’re believing.
They think He’s an angry, intolerant, demanding tyrant who is way up on His throne looking down on us and so very disappointed. Or, they think He’s “the universe,” an impersonal power that has no real connection to humanity, but pulls the strings in our favor or not based on luck.
They’re wrong.
What God is really like, and I have seen evidence of this in my own life, is this right here:
“The Lord is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. The Lord is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all His creation.” – Psalms 145:8-9
Yes, there’s infinitely more to know, but this is why I ache for the world to really know Him…and why I will spend my whole life seeking to know Him more and more.
As people who love Jesus, let’s strive today to represent Him well and make sure that people know who He truly is.
