What Does It Mean to Love Yourself?

In Mark 12, Jesus gives us two clear commands: love God with everything we have, and love our neighbors as ourselves.

We often focus on the “love your neighbor” part, but don’t miss those last two words: as yourself.

Sometimes showing ourselves grace can feel selfish. But treating yourself with the same kindness, patience, and mercy you offer others isn’t selfish. It can help you love the people around you from a healthier, fuller place.

God’s love reminds us that we are deeply valued by Him. And when we begin to see ourselves through His eyes, we can more freely extend that same grace and love to others.

This week, look for one simple way to show kindness to someone else—and don’t forget to offer a little of that kindness to yourself, too.

“love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.… Love your neighbor as yourself.” – Mark 12:29-31
