How Psalm 23 Inspired “Lead On Good Shepherd”
The path through life is rarely straight, easy, or free of bumps. There are twists and turns, hills, valleys, and cliffs that can leave us feeling confused—when we forget who we’re following, that is. That’s why Patrick Mayberry wrote Lead On Good Shepherd.
Well, I’ve been turned ’round
But I’ve never been lost
Seen the water get troubled
But we walked across
When my knees were shaking
You held my hand
Turning my problems
To a promised land
“Have you ever felt lost? Do you ever feel alone? Have you ever felt like you have no clue why life has taken you where it has? I know I sure have,” Patrick says.
God knows us and what we go through, though, and He’s given us encouragement in scripture for those moments. Patrick found that encouragement, and the inspiration for Lead On Good Shepherd, in the book of Psalms.
He says, “Psalm 23 paints a beautiful picture of the Lord as a good shepherd who promises to never leave us or forsake us.”
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.“
Patrick points to the hope that we can find in these verses: “He leads us, he comforts us, he protects us, he provides. Even in the presence of our enemies, he has the best for us. Through the darkest valleys, the Good Shepherd promises to walk with you every single step of the way. He won’t leave you alone, all you have to do is follow one step at a time.”
We may not always understand why God is leading us where He is. We will walk through some dark valleys. But if we trust in who God is and what He’s promised us, we’ll be able to keep walking in confidence.
Our hope, along with Patrick’s, is that this song can help you trust in the Lord when the road gets dark.
Step by step, day by day
Lead me on, Lord I pray
Road gets dark, walk by faith
Lead on, Good Shepherd
“I pray this song massively encourages you and reminds you that Jesus the Good Shepherd can be trusted and He’s so worth following,” Patrick shared.
Lead on, good shepherd
I’ll follow all my days
There ain’t nothing sweeter
Than to watch You make a way
You’ve walked me through the valley
But You never steered me wrong
So lead on, good shepherd
Lead on
