Celebrating John and Charles Wesley
Before there were megachurches, revival meetings, or hymns sung across continents, there were two brothers traveling dusty roads on horseback, determined to stir hearts awake to the love of Christ. John and Charles Wesley didn’t set out to start a movement, but their lives would spark one of the greatest revivals in Christian history.
Born in England in the early 1700s, John and Charles grew up in a large family shaped by strong faith. In their early years, both brothers pursued ministry, but something was missing. They later described their work as full of effort but lacking heart. Everything changed in 1738, when they each experienced powerful personal encounters with the gospel. John described it simply: “I felt my heart strangely warmed.” From that moment, everything shifted.
John Wesley became the passionate preacher, riding over 250,000 miles on horseback across England and America to share the message of salvation by grace through faith. He organized small groups, trained lay leaders, and called people not just to believe in Jesus but to live for Him daily. Charles Wesley, meanwhile, picked up a different instrument: the pen. He wrote over 6,500 hymns, giving the movement its voice. Songs like “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”, “Christ the Lord Is Risen Today” and “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”, weren’t just beautiful they taught theology, preached the gospel, and planted truth deep into hearts.
Their impact was massive. The Wesley brothers helped spark the Methodist movement, emphasizing personal holiness, evangelism, and care for the poor all rooted in the transforming power of God’s grace. At their core, John and Charles Wesley were fueled by a simple but world-changing belief: that salvation is a gift of grace, and that no one is beyond the reach of God’s love.
Their voices, one from the pulpit and one through song, still echo today, calling us to deeper faith, deeper love, and a life fully surrendered to Christ.
