Psalm 121:1-8 NLT says, 1 I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there? 2 My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! 3 He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. 4 Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps. 5 The Lord himself watches over you! The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade. 6 The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon at night. 7 The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. 8 The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.

We’ve probably heard some of these verses in worship songs, or seen them on a piece of decor in someone’s home, but how often have we really ever stopped to unpack this passage?

This Psalm expresses so much assurance and hope in the eternal protection of our God, the Maker of Heaven and Earth.

So many times in life, when things get hard and challenging, we tend to look for temporary relief or a temporary solution for our problems. We just want to escape the issue the quickest way possible, and we often believe the lie that the best way to do that is by taking things into our own hands. Then, what happens more times than not? We get mad at God when things don’t go our way and our problems persist.

What if God is allowing our problem to persist so we can learn to turn to Him first?

He can help us, but we have to lean into Him.

He can guide us, but we have to give up making our own way.

He can protect us, but we have to stop seeking out protection in other sources.

After reading these verses from Psalm 121, let’s ask ourselves this question: Why would we seek protection from anyone else but God? He is always looking out for us, He is always protecting us, and He is always watching over us…

Our only job is to lean into Him.
