8 Bible Verses To Remind You That God Is In Control

A few years ago, I was driving myself and a friend home from a Super Bowl party. I had taken this same drive many times and I was confident I knew where I was going and that I’d get there safely. However, what I didn’t see coming was a patch of black ice that sent my far less-than-graceful 2004 Ford Explorer skidding across the road.

What was a very relaxing drive turned into full-blown chaos in less than two seconds. I was paralyzed with fear until I remembered the lesson from driving school about this very situation. My instructor’s words came flooding back to me: “pump your breaks.” So, I did just that. And as I pumped my breaks, by some miracle my car slowly came to a stop.

So why am I telling you this random, chaotic story? Well, because it’s kind of a metaphor for my life, and maybe yours too. So often, I think I’ve got everything under control, MY control. Then, something pops up, such as a patch of black ice, that throws me into a tail-spin. In those moments, I’m forced to step out of my self-reliance and remember my Savior who is far more powerful than myself.

Maybe, as you start this new year, you’re facing a situation where you feel as helpless as a car skidding on ice. It could be a health issue, a financial situation, or a rocky relationship. No matter what it is, remind yourself of some wise words from the One who has always been, and always will be, in control…

Here are a few verses to get you started:

1. “Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” – Proverbs 19:21

2. “for dominion belongs to the Lord and he rules over the nations.” – Psalm 22:28

3. “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” – Colossians 1:17

4. “Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.” – Jeremiah 10:23

5. “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” – Genesis 50:20

6. “say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.” – Isaiah 35:4

7. “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest” – Exodus 33:14

8. “I am the Lord, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God.  I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me, so that from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting people may know there is none besides me.  I am the Lord, and there is no other.  I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the Lord, do all these things.” –Isaiah 45:5-7
