Treasured Moments In Black History: Rosa Parks

Hope has a strange way of shining. It’s most evident in difficult times. This is Treasured Moments In Black History.

It’s amazing how God can use little things to promote great impact. It happened in 1955; Rosa was traveling home after a hard day of work. She was minding her own business when the bus stopped. Jim Crow Law demanded that Blacks and whites could not sit together. The driver told her to surrender her seat and to go to the back.

Although she had grown up with many other demeaning situations, that day, she refused to comply. The police were called and she was arrested. This sparked a reaction that caused African Americans in Montgomery, Alabama to take a stand. They refused to ride the bus until they were treated with the same dignity as other passengers.

This boycott was met by ridicule, threats, job loss, and even the bombing of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s home. The boycott lasted 381 long days. Although Rosa lost her job and was unable to find another one in Montgomery, her calling as a symbol of quiet strength has been noted world wide. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Medal.

She died in 2005. Her body was placed in the rotunda of the Capitol for two days. Who knew that a simple deed in the south could lead to receiving recognition reserved for U.S. presidents.

We’re amazed at her courage to take a simple stand, a stand that challenged our nation to see people as precious and valuable.
