Hope has a strange way of shining. It’s most evident in difficult times. This is Treasured Moments In Black History.

John M. Perkins is a share cropper’s son who felt the sting of poverty in his years growing up in New Hebron Mississippi back in the 1950s. But life changed for him one day at age 17 when his older brother was murdered by a police officer in a racially charged incident. John fled his hometown vowing to never return.

Later, again, he found his life turned upside down. This time, with a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. The Lord saved him and John became an outspoken civil rights leader. On numerous occasions, he was arrested in his quest to fight injustice. However, in one encounter, he was severely beaten at the hands of a Mississippi policeman. But instead of succumbing to anger and hatred, John sensed the Lord telling him that the officer and others like him are spiritually damaged and in need of Christ’s healing power.

Thereafter, John broke his vow and returned to his hometown in Mississippi a changed man with new hope and a new vision. It was clear that the Lord wanted to use him to bridge the gap between the races. He launched a ministry today known as the John M. Perkins Foundation for Reconciliation and Development. He also launched a program in Mississippi to aid the poor who needed opportunity to rise up out of poverty. Awarded numerous honorary doctorates for his efforts, John continues to influence for Christ, spurring on a new generation of reconcilers.
