What does it mean to guard something?

Protecting something at all costs, sacrificing everything to keep it from harm, doing whatever it takes to make sure that whatever it is will be safe and secure. All of these are correct, and there is probably even more that you could come up with to define what this word means to you.

Proverbs 4:23 speaks to this idea of guarding something; in fact, it reminds us to guard the most important thing we have: our heart.

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” – Proverbs 4:23

In this text, Solomon is giving us an important warning to pay attention to the desires and focuses of our hearts and make sure that they keep us on the right path.

In this life, there are going to be affections, desires, and things that try to steer us off course. So how do we follow Solomon’s wisdom and make sure that our hearts are guarded and righteous?

Surrounding yourself with friends who help keep you on course is a solid start, and staying grounded in the Word of God is an even better option.

This means that sometimes we are going to have to put boundaries on our desires… We can’t chase after everything we see and think that we want. Take it from experience because I did that recently…I thought something was in line with what God had for me, and I ended up being wrong. God then made His plan for my family and I abundantly clear, and now we are running towards it with our eyes fixed on Him.

So, look straight ahead, friend. Keep your eyes fixed on Christ. Don’t allow those who will try to derail you control your thoughts.

You’ve got this. No, let me rephrase that…He’s got this. Now go get it.
