As a young college student, you are constantly pressured to get an internship. When summer comes around, one of the top questions you get hounded with is, “So what’s the internship for this summer?” Personally, in my first year of college, I was being a typical hard-headed child, who wanted to figure it all out on their own.

My father sent me the application for an opportunity to intern at BRIGHT-FM last year, and I pushed it aside. One day he told me that I shouldn’t take this opportunity for granted because how often do young Christians get an opportunity to learn in the workplace while growing in their faith?

I submitted my application to intern in Community Engagement and a few weeks later, I found myself getting welcomed into the station for my interview. The entire station is like a family and that’s the energy that I continued to feel when I came back to spend my summer with them.

On my first day, everyone was so embracing and eager to get to know me. My first day jitters quickly disappeared solely because of how inviting the entire BRIGHT-FM family was. I was treated like I mattered, and that made me want to work even harder to excel.

Instead of the stereotypical intern tasks like fetching coffee and deep cleaning the office, I was given real life tasks to accomplish, including learning how to work the front desk, taking phone calls, emailing radio listeners, hands on community outreach, and creating digital content. I was able to tap into and develop my strengths, as well as, be exposed to more professional aspects of the workplace.

One of my favorite takeaways from my experience that I will be forever grateful for, is getting my writing skills sharpened and out into the world through SHINE Daily. When I saw my name and writing posted on the SHINE Daily section of the website, I couldn’t believe it. I got the space to grow professionally, spiritually, and creatively at BRIGHT-FM. I was even able to come back, during my sophomore year, and get help for an assignment, which I aced, thanks to the expert help I received.

BRIGHT-FM couldn’t have been a better place for me to spend my summer that year. God’s plan is always the BEST plan!
