How To Calm Your Heart When Worry Is All You Feel
It’s 10:00pm, and you’re settling into bed after a long day. You’re desperate to drift off into a deep sleep, but your brain is racing one hundred miles per minute, processing all of the stressors of the day and planning how you’re going to avoid the impending crisis that is looming over your not-so-distant future.
We know it isn’t healthy to worry, but sometimes it feels inevitable! Life throws so many things our way that are out of our control, and it can be difficult to just shove them to the side. Our strained relationships, health, a child who has gone astray, natural disasters, terrorism… these things can leave us feeling drained and helpless.
Thankfully, we serve a God who doesn’t ask us to just shove our doubt to the side or handle things on our own. He tells us to bring those worries to Him (1 Peter 5:7). When we find ourselves in the midst of a storm, we can run to God, knowing that He cares about us, and we can place our worries at His feet. After we give those worries over to Him, we are called to be still. What does “being still” look like, where we barely find the time to sit through a red light?
In order to be still, we must be intentional.
Set aside a few minutes a day to be quiet and still.
If you are enduring a stressful season of life, allow yourself to eliminate unnecessary distractions so that you don’t miss how God might be trying to guide you through the turbulent times. You may be surprised by what you hear.
Let go of your expectations.
Give God the freedom to work things out for good in His divine way. He doesn’t need our help. His ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9).
God doesn’t care only about the concerns in our life that seem worthy of His time. He cares about every aspect of our lives: the big things and the small things.
He’s already working it out.
Be still and know that He is God.
