Food security is a privilege, and it’s one not everyone has. One group that suffers the most from food insecurity is children.

That’s where Backpack Buddies steps in.

Each week during the school year, Backpack Buddies provides backpacks full of food for children to take home so they don’t go hungry on Saturday and Sunday when they aren’t in school.

This service takes a lot of planning and work, so the organization often starts collecting their non-perishable food in the summer to be prepared for the upcoming school year.

Grace Pointe Community Church of the Nazarene is one of the many partners of Backpack Buddies who help collect and pack food. During the school year, Grace Pointe fills over 25 backpacks with food and distributes them every Friday for students to take home. They bring the bag back on Monday, and the process repeats at the end of the week. This is an amazing and incredibly important service, but it wouldn’t happen without the support of the community.

Although kids are out of school, Grace Pointe and Backpack Buddies need our help right now.

This is why BRIGHT-FM is partnering with Grace Pointe for our next Pantry Project to collect the items they most desperately need for the upcoming school year.

On Saturday, July 16th from 5 pm – 7 pm, we will be collecting donations at Grace Pointe Community Church in Severn. Stop by to drop off your donation and visit with the team at the BRIGHT-FM table. You can also pick up some free swag, enter to win a great prize, and even enjoy a FREE concert from The Afters while you’re there!

If you’re planning on attending and are able to donate, the pantry is looking for specific items that can easily be opened and eaten by children. Below is a full list of the preferred items:

Items Needed for Backpack Buddies:

  • Chef Boyardee (individual servings w/ pull-tops)
  • Soup (individual servings w/ pull-tops)
  • Vienna sausages (individual servings w/ pull-tops)
  • Individual mac-n-cheese bowls/packs
  • Individual tuna/chicken pouches (or cans w/ pull-tops)
  • Pop-tarts
  • Fruit cups

We are so grateful we can gather together as the BRIGHT-FM community and body of Christ to help support the amazing work of Grace Pointe and Backpack Buddies. We hope to see you there! For more information on the July 16th Pantry Project, visit our event page.
