A Promise From God To Help You Start 2021

2020 cut out in black paper and crumpled up as it lays in the palm of a person's hand

The New Year always brings a wave of people declaring their resolutions and sharing their determination to make this upcoming year better than the last.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been seeing even more eagerness to move on from 2020 and welcome 2021. This is probably because 2020 was one of the hardest years many of us have ever experienced.

Personally, I have been feeling this eagerness too…I find myself looking towards 2021 as if the clock will strike midnight, the ball will drop in an empty Times Square, and magically all my problems will disappear as life goes back to normal.

However, as I have been pondering the new year, I began to realize this might be a dangerous mindset to have. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful thing to look forward to a new year with optimism and eagerness, to walk into 2021 with expectant hope. But after the disappointments and trials of 2020, I’ve learned that it’s a risky thing to place all our hope and joy in the year to come.

The truth is, we don’t know what this next year will bring. I pray it brings celebrations, reunions with loved ones, highly anticipated travels, and healing for us all. But we really don’t have any way of knowing what’s on the other side of 2021. So, there’s one important thing I’ve been trying to remember at the start of this new year, and I want to pass it along to you: you’re not alone. Whatever you encounter on New Years Day and beyond, you don’t have to face it alone.

The Bible tells us to “be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.” – Deuteronomy 31:6

This promise from God reminds us that there is a solid place to plant our hope, a place that won’t waiver or let us down. While I’m joining you in hoping and believing for a beautiful year ahead, no matter what this year ends up bringing, may we each remember that God has promised to go with us and never, ever leave us.
