7 Ways To Honor & Celebrate Black History Month In Maryland
As we kick-off February, it is important to be intentional about honoring the lives, contributions, and legacies of Black men and women in our country. In order to celebrate Black History Month and help you to do the same, we have compiled some ways to celebrate and explore Black history around Maryland.
Below is a list of different opportunities from Visit Maryland that you can participate in, both this month and year round!
1. Frederick Douglass Driving Tour
Embark on a journey through the Eastern Shore, Annapolis, and Baltimore as you learn all about Frederick Douglass’ life and legacy. Visit Maryland has created a map and itinerary that you can follow, which include educational landmarks to stop at along the way.
2. Explore the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad
Follow along the network of safe houses and trails that Harriet Tubman created as she helped enslaved people travel north to freedom. You can plan your route and discover historical stopping points.
3. The National Great Blacks In Wax Museum
This museum celebrates the lives and accomplishments of African Americans throughout history with its over 150 life-size wax figures and exhibits.
4. African American Heritage Walking Tour
On select Saturdays in February, you can attend this award-winning walking tour through Annapolis where you’ll explore the incredible impact African Americans had on Annapolis and abroad. Highlights include history about Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, and Thurgood Marshall, the first African American Supreme Court Justice. Tickets are $22/Adult & $10/Child. 5. B&O Railroad Museum
A visit to the B&O Railroad museum will teach visitors about the crucial contributions that African Americans had on the Baltimore to Ohio railroading system. You can also check out the B&O Museum’s African American Railroading Oral Archives video to learn about African American experiences within the railroad and transportation industry.
6. Reginald F. Lewis Museum of African American History & Culture
Located in downtown Baltimore, this Smithsonian affiliate provides 400 years worth of African American history in politics, sports, the arts, media, education, and so much more. Head on over to their website for details and to purchase tickets in advance.
7. Benjamin Banneker Historical Park & Museum
This Baltimore County park aims to educate and connect visitors to the legacy of Benjamin Banneker, a free African American man from the 1700s. Find more info on their events, how to register, and their mission by visiting their website or Facebook page.
